Five Finger Death Punch frontman Ivan Moody came close to being fired last year over his alcoholism, he's revealed.
After going through a divorce he lost control of his drinking to such an extent that he couldn't remember having been on stage.
And his bandmates stopped talking to him – then threatened to replace him if he didn't pull himself together.
Moody says: "I was a totally functioning alcoholic. But then I couldn't even tell I had been onstage. I'd wake up the next day and say, 'What did we do last night?' Someone would go, 'We played in front of 20,000 people.' I'd go, 'Fuck, I wish I remembered.'"
Moody got so bad that when he wasn't on the road, he'd sleep all day and drink all night.
"I was going through women like water, and it just turned into a pattern," he admits. "I felt like a junkie. My own band members wouldn't return calls and I lost multiple tour managers and crew.
"I can't tell you how many friends stopped talking to me. It's really sad that sometimes you have to go to that extreme bottom to find your way back up – but it's true."
Guitarist Zoltan Bathory agrees things went close to the edge, but adds: "I always knew there was no way I would ever let him go. We're a band. We had some rough times. But real bands work through that stuff."
5FDP release The Wrong Side Of Heaven And The Righteous Side Of Hell – partly inspired by Moody's experiences – at the end of July.
